On 6 May 2018, 5,000 amateur cyclists will take to the roads surrounding Leeds as part of the Maserati Tour de Yorkshire Ride, just hours before the professionals complete the final day of the Tour de Yorkshire. This year, event organisers Human Race and Welcome to Yorkshire have paired up with world famous jersey designers Castelli to create a very special commemorative jersey for participants and cycling fans, which tells the story of Yorkshire cycling legend, Beryl Burton OBE.
Born in 1937 in Leeds, Beryl’s remarkable cycling career spanned three decades as she dominated women’s road and track racing in the UK in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Winning more than 90 domestic championships and seven world titles, one of Beryl’s crowning achievements was setting the women’s record for the 12-hour time-trial, which exceeded the men’s record for two years.
Beryl’s daughter Denise Burton-Cole, a formidable cyclist in her own right, has offered input into the jersey design. Brought to life by Castelli Servizio Corse Designer – UK, Darren Gumm, the jersey includes a small stripe detail as a nod to Beryl’s reign over British cycling, Beryl’s initials (BB), and on the inside pocket; a list of all of Beryl’s world record titles and how long they stood for.
